Polysaccharides in Aloe Vera
MPS Polysaccharides Aloin

What are Polysaccharides?

There are over 200 constituents in Aloe Vera, the single most important constituent being the Polysaccharides.  The Aloe leaf has Polysaccharides in the parenchymal cells, which is used by the plant for energy.

The Polysaccharides in Aloe Vera are not broken down or absorbed by the digestive system, they are self engulfing and reach the blood stream where they have amazing activities at that level.  The Polysaccharides are integral to the chemical composition of Aloe, they are truly unique to Aloe, and are important to many of the benefits of Aloe.  The big Polysaccharides appear to be immune stimulatory whereas the smaller ones have anti-inflammatory activity.

Aloe's healing comes from Growth Factors, Amino Acids, Glycoproteins, Gibberellin, aAuxin and minerals such as Zinc, as well as Polysaccharides.  These biologically active agents synergize to give us the miracle of Aloe Vera.

Epidermal and Fibroblast growth factors come from the mucilage and stimulate the Fibroblast directly for growth and repair.  The cells as a result migrate within the wound in a proper manner to increase wound healing.  Mucilage is also a good anti-inflammatory agent.

If an Aloe leaf is cut the mucilage in combination with the Aloe gel hardens which seals the cut.  This enables the plant to protect itself and stop the gel fillet, which is 99.05% water leaking from the leaf.  Aloe Vera tends to improve the penetration of water whereas mucilage tends to block the escape of water from a wound.

The level of Polysaccharides is an excellent indicator of the general quality of the Aloe.  So it is obvious that good quality Aloe should contain the highest possible level of Polysaccharides.  Aloe also contains an enzyme Cellulase in its tissues which can start to break the major Polysaccharides down as soon as harvest and processing occurs, so it is important to keep the leaves cool and process as quickly as possible.  Using heat to process Aloe Vera destroys a fair proportion of its potency.

When processing the entire leaf one obtains all the active constituents in the leaf.  It is a proven fact that the largest percentage of the active ingredients in the Aloe Vera leaf lies in the thick, slightly gelatinous gel between the rind and the fillet of the leaf.
